Ladies and Germs

For the past three weeks Mosaic has been studying Wellness during science. This week our focus was on germs and body defenses. My students made some short, cute and informative skits to spread the word...not the germs.

Peace+ Hopes+Dreams=Happy Days

What a thoughtful week the students have engaged in. On Monday and Tuesday the 3rd graders in Mosaic came together to read books about peace such as Why War Is Never A Good Idea and What Peace Feels Like. The children followed up with two activities, one where they made Pinwheels for Peace and the next day the students created peace doves with their own ideas about what peace feels like, looks like, sounds like, tastes like and smells like.

During theme this week we finalized our Hopes and Dreams for this school year. We read Appelemando's Dreams which helped the students to understand the importance of dreams and to dream big enough and bright enough for everyone to see. I can't wait to get photos of their dreams up on the blog soon!

In math we've focused on addition strategies. Here's a look at a few facts we've discussed:

Counting on Facts- just add 1,2, or sometimes 3
5+2=7  "I counted on 2 from 5"

Doubles Facts- add two of the same numbers

4+4=8 "It's two of the same number!"

Tens Facts-adding together numbers that equal 10

"Seven plus three makes a ten! So does six plus four."

Neighbor Facts-adding together two numbers that are "next door to each other"
5 and 4 are neighbors so are 5 and 6

Fast Tens-ten plus any number

10 +6 =16 "You just add a 6 in the ones place."

Fast Nine-nine plus any number
" You kind of move one over to make it a ten on the blue side and then add the others like a fast ten...so it's like 10+7, but then you subtract 1."

We are all happy about school and learning a lot!!

7 Days Down...

After 7 days of school we're excited to show you what we've been up to. Here is just a glimpse into our busy and fun days.

Our Math Glyphs! These glyphs tell about how we like to learn math.

Lots of kids LOVE math!
Our Number Corner! Do YOU notice a pattern?
We've been charting What Good Readers Do and the Ways We Choose Books. We know a lot, huh?
We love poetry!
We know our names are special, just like Chrysanthemum, so we wrote acrostic name poems.

Welcome

Hello and welcome third grade friends and families!

I have been working hard this summer setting up our classroom for upcoming year.  Like many of you I have made the move from Allen Brook to Williston Central School. I am glad that it is almost time to have you all here with me! I have been hard at work unpacking boxes,  decorating bulletin boards,  organizing some really fun books that are just waiting for some great readers to pick them up.

I hope that you have had a wonderful summer and have enjoyed the great weather we have had so far.  Last summer my fiance and I bought our house in Montpelier.  We never had a chance to take advantage of the pool, but don't worry we made up for it this summer! We also walked our dog at Hubbard Park MANY times, traveled to see friends and my Gram in Long Island  and of course, hiked, swam and BBQ'd. It has been a wonderful summer  and I have had many great experiences. What are some things that you like to do during the summer? I am excited to hear about the adventures you have been having with families and friends!

This is now our classroom blog and will be something we use a lot this year to share our learning and fun activities with our families and friends. If you or your family would like to comment on a post, that is great, just click the "comments" link next to where it says "Posted by Miss Steele", write what you would like to share in the white box and click "Post Comment." I enjoy hearing what you have to say!

I look forward to meeting many of you at the Open House!
